While South African President Jacob Zuma may be in China for the second time, it is for the first time as the president of the republic and this time he is on a mission to strengthen trade ties.

Zuma is expected to sign a series of trade agreements with the country's largest trading partner.

Zuma will also hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao in Beijing. Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice President Xi Jinping, respectively, are also reported to be part of the line-up for Zuma’s stay.

Zuma will travel to Shanghai and also visit the World Expo as Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe did only a few weeks back.

No less than 300 businessmen and ministers are accompanying the African National Congress leader as he looks for tips from the Chinese on how to boost South Africa’s growth rate.

Martyn Davies, chief executive of business consultants Frontier Advisory, told the AFP news agency that South Africa was trying to strengthen ties with other emerging countries.

"As the largest economy on the African continent, South Africa is punching below its weight when in comes to global economic platforms like the G8," said Davies.

"So there is a need to collaborate with other emerging economies, not collide with them."
