The World Economic Forum has long been an important gathering place for South Africans, and twice they’ve stolen the show. Twenty years ago, the WEF hosted the first international joint appearance of the troika who guided the country to democracy - Nelson Mandela, FW de Klerk and Mangosuthu Buthelezi. Apart from the positive publicity this generated, the WEF also deserves credit for effecting the abandonment by the ANC of its bankrupted socialist dogma of nationalisation and central control. It was during discussions with one of his heroes, the Prime Minister of Vietnam, that the South African statesman learned economic ideas they’d both shared and held so dear didn’t work in the modern world.
